New Oxford secondary school draws closer

A planning application to deliver a new secondary school for Oxford will soon be submitted to Oxford City Council to address an identified significant shortfall in secondary places in the city from September 2019

The planning application is to deliver a masterplan for the redevelopment of the Harlow Centre site in Marston to provide a new secondary school, The Swan School, as well as a new state-of-the-art building for Meadowbrook College and new outdoor sports and play facilities for St Nicholas' Primary School.

Galliford Try and the Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) commenced public consultation on the draft masterplan in November 2017, and have since been working with planners at Oxford City Council on the proposals in response to consultation feedback. Following this pre-application process, it is anticipated that a planning application will be submitted in the near future.

Graham Wilson, Senior Design Manager at Galliford Try, said:

“We and ESFA felt it was important to take a collaborative approach and work closely with the planning department at Oxford City Council to ensure that consultation feedback was taken into account before we submit the final masterplan for approval.

“This way, we can try to ensure that any potential issues are addressed in advance, minimising any potential delays to the planning process once the application is submitted. This is crucial to ensure that we can deliver this urgently required secondary school in time to address the projected future shortfall.”

Galliford Try and its team of consultants have been working with the City Council on the design of the new school, as well as seeking to minimise the impact on local infrastructure of new access arrangements.

Mr Wilson added:

“We are continuing to liaise with local stakeholder groups, particularly with reference to access to the new school, and will be providing full updates once we are ready to proceed with the planning application.”

Information about the project is available on www.marstonschools.com and the website will be updated to provide information about the final masterplan once the planning application is ready to be submitted.
